Presenter: Professor Omar H. Ali

Dr. Omar H. Ali is Associate Professor of African American and Diaspora Studies at The University of North Carolina, Greensboro. An honor's graduate of the University of London, he received his Ph.D. in History from Columbia University. Of Peruvian and East Indian descent, Dr. Ali is the author of several works on the African Diaspora in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean worlds. He has served as a Library Scholar at Harvard University's David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies and as a Fulbright professor of history and anthropology at Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogota. He currently serves as a Road Scholar for the North Carolina Humanities Council to teach American audiences about the history of Islam and the African Diaspora. Dr. Ali recently wrote the narrative for the exhibit "The African Diaspora in the Indian Ocean World" for the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture of The New York Public Library and his latest book, Islam in the Indian Ocean World: A Documentary History, will be published by Bedford St. Martin's Press.
